Where do we get understanding; Wisdom from?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily [to find out] whether these things were so.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary of American English SCRU’PLE, v.t. To doubt; to hesitate to believe; to question; as, to scruple the truth or accuracy of an account or calculation.

Romans 15:1-6 1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please [his] neighbor for [his] good, leading to edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” 4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind [and] one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalms 119:129-136 ESV 129 Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. 130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. 131 I open my mouth and pant, because I long for your commandments. 132 Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name. 133 Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me. 134 Redeem me from man’s oppression, that I may keep your precepts. 135 Make your face shine upon your servant, and teach me your statutes. 136 My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.

Proverbs 2:1-9 1 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, *[And] apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, [And] lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as [for] hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth [come] knowledge and understanding; 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; [He is] a shield to those who walk uprightly; 8 He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, Equity [and] every good path.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;

Job 28:11-13, 15, 20, 27-28 11 [What is] hidden he brings forth to light. 12 “But where can wisdom be found? And where [is] the place of understanding? 13 Man does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living. 15 It cannot be purchased for gold, Nor can silver be weighed [for] its price. 20 “From where then does wisdom come? And where [is] the place of understanding? 27 Then He saw [wisdom] and declared it; He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out. 28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that [is] wisdom, And to depart from evil [is] understanding.’

Psalm 111:10 10 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do [His commandments.] His praise endures forever.

Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily [to find out] whether these things were so.

Deuteronomy 4:5-9 5 “Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should act according [to them] in the land which you go to possess. 6 “Therefore be careful to observe [them;] for this [is] your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation [is] a wise and understanding people.’ 7 “For what great nation [is there] that has God [so] near to it, as the LORD our God [is] to us, for whatever [reason] we may call upon Him? 8 “And what great nation [is there] that has [such] statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day? 9 “Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren,

Matthew 5:18-19 18 “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 “Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches [them,] he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

Psalm 73:16-17 16 When I thought [how] to understand this, It [was] too painful for me– 17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; [Then] I understood their end.

1 Timothy 4:6-7 15-16 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
